November 2009 Dan Rather Reports - Congo Copper Mine Story

From Friends of the Congo:

Dan Rather Reports Nominated For an Emmy for Congo Copper Mine Story:

"All Mine" focuses on an American company, Arizona's Freeport McMoran, which, when it bought a massive copper mine from the government of Congo, also took control of part of the impoverished country's economic future. Critics of the purchase said that the contract for the billion-dollar mine left the war-torn African nation with little in return, and that the U.S. government played a part in what many are describing as a modern day land grab.

"Once again 'Dan Rather Reports' has been recognized by a highly respected, national organization," said Mark Cuban, president and co-founder of HDNet. "To have this nomination from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences just backs up the fact that Dan and his staff put out an amazing program each and every week."

Affleck launches DR Congo appeal with short film

UN.org

Mick Jagger and actor Ben Affleck have launched a short film to highlight the plight of 250,000 refugees in eastern DR Congo.

The UN's refugee agency, the UNHCR, is hoping the Gimme Shelter film will help to raise $23 million to pay for emergency aid and clean water.

"A lot of these folks are like you and me. A lot of people I encountered were teachers, lawyers professors - everyday people whose towns were upended and who were living and struggling, with a kind of dignity that could just be you or me." (Ben Affleck)

UN.org - News Centre coverage of the story

It is our hope (The Congo Cause) that funding organizations will take notice of UNA-DRC who has offices in Goma and Kivu with grass roots teams who are willing to bring bed nets, food, education, and other help. They just need your financial support.
